Sustaining the Momentum

The National African HIV Prevention Programme (NAHIP) held its 4th Biennial Conference on 18/19 May 2006 on HIV prevention, treatment and care within African communities in the UK.

NAHIP works with predominantly African-led organisations to deliver HIV prevention work. NAHIP is funded by the Department of Health and managed by the African HIV Policy Network.

Africans represent the UK's second largest group of people affected by HIV. However, they face a significant amount of stigma and discrimination within African communities and wider society. The situation is compounded by insufficient resources to address their needs in order to enhance their life chances. The NAHIP conference pooled together different actors and decisionmakers to discuss these contradictions and challenge perceptions with a view to building new momentum. Workshops, skills-building sessions and paper presentations stimulated new and stronger partnerships for problem solving in many different HIV-related areas.

Conference delegates had an opportunity to:

  • share experience and good practice as well as learning from work done;
  • contribute to the development of an effective national response to HIV in African communities;
  • inform the agenda for future work with African communities;
  • network with a diverse mix of delegates.

Participants included:

  • African community members
  • Commissioners
  • Community groups
  • Funders and sponsors
  • Health care professionals
  • Health promoters
  • People living with HIV
  • Researchers
